Fred Architecture is committed to recognising and honouring the traditional custodians of the land, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, whose enduring connection to place informs our own approach to thoughtful, respectful design. Based in Naarm/Melbourne, Fred Architecture is an award-winning practice established in 2005 by Principal Architect Fiona Winzar.
Fiona brings over 15 years of prior experience with some of Australia’s top architectural firms and a passion for shaping the next generation of architects. She has dedicated many years to teaching Design, Construction and Sustainability at Melbourne University and RMIT, further enriching her expertise and approach to architecture.
Fred Architecture focuses on creating elegant, energy-efficient homes and workplaces that balance sustainability, practicality, and refined design.

Our approach is grounded in placemaking—designing spaces that blend our Australian identity with an intuitive response to our clients, the site, budget, and context. By emphasising passive solar design, proportion, scale, and material contrast, we craft contemporary spaces with a romantic expressiveness. Each project, whether a new build, extension, or office interior, offers a highly personalised design that invites a sense of purpose and place.
In response to the climate challenge, we champion passive design principles, energy collection, battery storage solutions, and all-electric homes and workplaces. Our projects have exceeded industry standards by incorporating the German Passivhaus model, including advanced building envelopes, fresh air systems, and superior airtightness.
