Concept for a New House in Donvale

The key feature of the design for this New House and Studio is its relationship to the dramatic site conditions. Almost unnoticeable from the street, the building and surrounds unfold as you move through the dwelling. The shear steepness of the site and natural bush are gradually revealed until you are completely struck by it.

By using a narrow footprint and increasing the building height as the land falls away a double height living space and pool area is created and suspended in the beautiful bush setting. The long narrow shape of the dwelling enables minimal tree removal and maximises north orientation, a gesture that opposes the neighbouring mc mansions that sit across the site and are oriented west.

The design features a fire-proof self-contained studio for retreat in case of bushfire.
